A Day of Highs and Challenges at Donington Park for the GBS Zero Race Team….
/It was a true mixed bag for the GBS Zero race team at Donington Park this weekend, as we took on the latest round of the CSCC Magnificent Sevens Series. Despite the challenges, the team delivered an incredible performance and came away with two trophies— a testament to determination, teamwork, and the capability of the Zero race car.
The day started with drama in qualifying when a failure of the lower rear rose joints forced the car into the paddock for urgent repairs. In a race against time, the team worked flat out and managed to get the car back together with just seconds to spare before heading out for Race 1.
Behind the wheel, Will Orton delivered an outstanding drive. Starting from the back, he pushed hard through the field, gaining an incredible eight places to secure 1st in class — an impressive result under pressure and in wet conditions. He also set the 5th fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:34.202, highlighting the true pace of the car.
Joining Will on track were fellow Zero drivers Chris McQueen and Ben Low. Unfortunately, it wasn’t their day. Chris was unable to make qualifying due to a wheel bearing issue, while Ben, who had worked hard to even make the event following earlier engine troubles, was ultimately forced to retire during qualifying when the issue returned.
Race 2 brought more action — and more adversity. After another strong showing, Will was unfortunately caught up in a incident on the track, sustaining damage to the front end and nose cone which brought his race to an early end. Remarkably, despite not finishing, he still secured another class win, alongside setting the 4th fastest lap with a time of 1:42.480.
It was a day full of ups and downs — but ultimately, the highs outweighed the challenges. The team’s efforts not only secured two trophies but also proved the strength and resilience of the car in real-world conditions, including validating the effectiveness of our crash structure.
A huge thank you goes to our GBS team, our supporters, partners, and of course Will for delivering such an incredible performance in demanding conditions. We’d also like to thank the organisers of the CSCC Magnificent Sevens Series and all the marshals for ensuring a safe and well-run event.
Finally, thank you to everyone who came along to support and watch — it was an amazing day, and we’re already looking forward to the next one.
